Ashford Baby Memorial Garden

We created the Ashford Baby Memorial Garden was in 2013 after local volunteers raised around £30,000.  It is unique being (as far as we know!) the only Baby Memorial Garden right in a town centre, fully accessible to everyone, and open every day of the year. It is a lovely place to sit and remember our special babies, and somewhere that helps raise awareness of the fact that 14 babies a day are dying, with one every sevendays in East Kent alone.

As well as being a special focal point for us, we also use the Garden for our annual Wave of Light event during Baby Loss AWareness Week.  The 2020 event will be on Sunday 11 October in the afternoon, and our annual Teddy Bears Picnic in July.  (in 2020 this will be on Sunday 5 July).  Everyone is welcome to join us for these events and there is no cost.

The centrepiece of the garden is our mosaic created by local people which is surrounded by name stones, each remembering one of our babies. We have now created an additional vertical panel for future name tiles and these continue to be available at a one off cost of £40 and all together we have over 250 name stones and name tiles, each one remembering one of our very special babies.  Please click the link below to the order form.

We are happy to take orders for nametiles with payment in installments or at a later date.

We want to keep the tiles as simple as possible, so only the Baby’s name and a date can be engraved.  We are limited to 20 character spaces for the name and where a name was not given, an option is to have ‘Baby Surname’. We can accommodate only one date but it is up to you which date you choose.

Feel free to call us on 01233 643 976 if you would like to discuss options or have any queries. To order a nametile, please click the link below to download a copy of our Name Tile flyer and our Name Tile order form Alternatively, please email the details to us using our 'contact us' page, making sure you give us all the information on the form, please.  And please remember the limit on the number of characters!  If you would like to pay on line for a name tile, please use the following details - Account Name SANDS - EAST KENT  Sort code 30-90-69 Account number 36492560

Wave of Light

Each year, during Baby Loss Awareness Week (9-15 October), across the world people light a candle for one hour to remember our special babies and with the different time zones this creates a 'wave of light' around the world.  We take part in the Wave of Light with a special event at the Ashford Baby Memorial Garden where over 200 people get together  to remember their babies and to show that none of us are alone.  The evening consists of some lovely poems and readings, some gentle music and, most poignantly, remembering the names of nearly 300 babies, each and every one so special.

Other local Gardens

Although ours is unique in many ways, there are also a number of other baby gardens elsewhere in Kent.  Those we are aware of are the Making Miracles garden in Rochester, the Devlins Babies Garden in Folkestone, and the Tunbridge Wells Sands garden in the Tunbridge Wells Crematorium.  Many, but not all, crematorium also have special baby areas. Please contact them direct for further information.

Creating the Ashford Baby Memorial Garden

For anyone interested in how we set up the garden, perhaps groups planning something similar elsewhere, we have produced a report on how we created the Ashford Baby Memorial Garden which may be of interest.   We are also intrerested in having a number of name tile areas in other lpocations around East Kent.  We are already in toch with the West Faversham Community Centre and are planning a baby area within their garden and would like to talk to other organisations about doing something similar in their areas.  Ideally we'd like name tile areas in New Romney, Folkestone, Dover, Deal, Sandwich, Margate, Whitstable Sittingbourne and Sheerness, so if you are involved in a community space within any of those areas, please get in touch!
