I am proud to be the Chair of East Kent Sands with our fantastic team of volunteers who give so much time and energy to support anyone affected by the death of a baby and in raising awareness.  As you will see, most of us have direct experience of baby loss so we really can empathise.   We are all volunteers and we run two monthly support groups, in Ashford and Margate as well as providing telephone, face to face, email and text support.  We are out and about as often as we possibly can at fetes and fairs, community days and networking opportunities, raising awareness of baby deaths and the support available to anyone affected by the death of a baby, no matter when or how long ago - it is so important that we encourage people to talk about this sometimes taboo subject.

Our team of volunteers are fantastic and we can promise that any time or money given to us really will be used wisely, to support local people and local services.  Thank you to them, and to their families and to everyone who supports our activities, in any way.

As well as our regular Team Members, we are building up our team of 'Local Volunteers' who help identify opportunities for us to get to events across the whole of East Kent and who make sure our posters are up in supermarkets, community halls and anywhere else, and that our leaflets are available locally.  If that very informal role might be for you, or if you would just like to help at an event or two, or if you have any ideas,  please let us know.

Meanwhile, we are looking for a someone able to take notes at our monthly meetings in Ashford and to type them up for us, so that we can remember what we decided and who said they would do what!  If this might interest you, please contact us so that we can have a chat.  Our meetings are pretty informal and we usually we manage a bit of fun as well!

Thankyou.

Emma Oram (Chair)

I lost my daughter, Harriet, in 2006.  The help and support I received through my local SANDS meetings at the time was phenomenal, especially talking with people who had experienced similar losses to mine.  I have been a befriender since 2015 and want to support bereaved families through their own losses and show them that, whilst their baby will never be forgotten, there are ways of moving on and continuing with a happy future. I am a trained Befriender, providing telephone support and running our monthly Support Meetings in Margate.

We got involved with Sands after losing our grandson, Liam, in 2004.  Since them as a family we have been fundraising for Sands and have been involved in the Baby Garden project from the outset.  Christine now takes the lead on fundraising while Chris is Treasurer.  Having retired recently, we time to take on some of the external training and publicity events and meetings.

I lost my lovely boy, Liam, full term in 2004 after a very straightforward pregnancy.  I had wonderful support from the midwives in Watford and since then have been supporting Sands.  My vision had always to have a special garden to remember Liam and all the other special babies and I got together some wonderful friends who helped make that happen.  I am now Chair of the group and a trained Befriender, helping with the Ashford group, as well as being one of the WHH liaison volunteers.  My husband Dan and two lovely daughters Emily and Ruby are now very active with Sands too.

Our daughter Louise was born sleeping nearly 21 years ago and is never forgotten.  We met East Kent Sands early in 2017 at an awareness event that they held in Canterbury, which for us was an emotional evening.   From this moment we felt driven to join the Group to help fundraise and raise awareness.  We are now both trained Befrienders, providing telephone support and running monthly Support Meetings with Sarah in Margate, as well as being the liaison point for the QEQM Hospital.

                             Lin Burroughs
- Volunteer

Lin joined us in 2017 after meeting Emma at a British Sign Language event, making the mistake of saying that she was looking for something to do!  Lin is now our secretary, keeping us firmly on track and making sure we all remember what we agreed!  Lin's photo will be here soon.

I lost my baby, Vaughan, in 2006, and for the past few years have been a volunteer with East Kent Sands after completing the Great North Run with my sister, raising money for Sands.  I am a trained Befriender, and help run the Support Meetings in Ashford as well as being one of the liaison points for the William Harvey.

I have been involved with Sands for quite a few years, first getting involved via my friend, Emma, with the Ashford Baby Garden Project.  I now co-ordinate the orders for our lovely name tiles in the Ashford Baby Memorial Garden.

I met Emma through a mutual friend and I've helped raise money for East Kent Sands since the Baby Memorial Garden project started.  I continue to help out as much as possible as the charity is very close to my heart having miscarried 7 babies and after losing a niece.  I felt very privileged when asked to join the committee early part of 2017.  I am now one of the liaison volunteers with the William Harvey Hospital.

We really do appreciate all the donations we are given and use these to support our considerable work across East Kent. We have our wonderful Baby Memorial Garden in Ashford with well over 200 namestones, each and everyone so precious to their families.  We train midwives and others and we provide cuddle cots and other equipment our two local hospitals in Ashford and Margate.
